British Horse Society successfully auctions 2 paintings

The British Horse Society hosted a charity raceday at Newbury Racecourse on 8th November 2018; the first day of the 2018 National Hunt Season, at which they sponsored two races and auctioned two paintings by our resident artist Sally Leggatt.

The paintings, depicting the handsome grey racehorse Silver Patriarch, grandson of the famous Northern Dancer, were originally commissioned by the National Stud.

Donated by the artist to raise funds for the BHS, in honour of renowned equine vet the late Stewart Hastie, the auction proceeds will provide funds for the Stewart Hastie Veterinary Student Champion fund.

Lively bidding produced a handsome sum to add to the BHS fund, to the delight of the artist, the BHS and the paintings new owner.

Foaled in 1994, Silver Patriarch had a successful career in his own right:

  • Champion 3 yo Stayer in Europe
  • Winner of the Doncaster St Leger in 1997
  • 2nd to Benny the Dip in in the Epsom Derby
  • At 4 yo won the Coronation Cup
  • 2nd in Irish St Leger
  • Jockey Pat Eddery
  • Trained by John Dunlop
  • Winnings of over £900,000
  • Stood at stud at the National Stud Newmarket
  • Died in 2009 of natural causes
